It doesn’t look too good for the American “green energy” industry right now, what with the Chinese slated to build wind turbine on autopilot, as it were.
Given the way things work over there, the government could just decree something to be done and, with a lot more ease than is the circumstance over here, really get it done, come hell or high water!

Here, we need to negotiate and negotiate, in the process compromising to such a degree that no one is pleased.
But though the Chinese may go and build wind turbine on autopilot, their system also has its imperfections.
For instance, the great Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is the world’s largest hydroelectric power station as calculated by capacity, generating in excess of eighteen thousand megawatts at present with a future power to sustain another four thousand three hundred.
This means that up to twenty-three million homes could be powered by this one single power station!

Unfortunately, the environmental costs are devastating, including an earthquake that measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and killed about eighty thousand people in May 2008.
Many highly respected scientists believe that the three hundred and twenty million tons of water collected by the dam placed too great a stress on the earth’s crust in a region noted for earthquakes since ancient times.
Indeed, the dam was only slightly below three and a half miles away from the epicenter of the quake, though over three hundred miles away from a known fault line.

Interesting, and sad – but what does all this have to do with the aforementioned “build wind turbine on autopilot” mania of the Chinese?
Well, the infamous Three Gorges Dam seemed to be built on autopilot, with the government decreeing it absolutely essential, case closed.
Up to one and a half million people have been forced from their homes with hardly any help, never mind the opportunity to refuse (with a stunning five million total projected in the many years to come) – all in the name of progress.

When to sell your company is one of the most important challenges facing a serial entrepreneur. Serial entrepreneurs are individuals who take pleasure in starting up a business much more than anything else. They are like serial daters, who enjoy “the chase” above and beyond any other aspect of a relationship.

So too the serial entrepreneur, who, once the company is really established – once money is steadily flowing in at a good amount, once staff has been hired and all plans worked out – once there’s, in a very crucial sense, nothing more for them to do, starts itching to relieve the thrill of the hunt all over again.

Thus the popularity of “when to sell your company” advice in the business literature, though such ideas appeal to any businessman or woman who does not simply wish to run his or her own business but really retire by selling a wildly successful business.

After all, numerous individuals who go into business for themselves are truly not looking to merely “be their own boss,” as the popular phrase has it. No; numerous such individuals go into business so that they can be financially independent – that is to say, retire, if they so choose.

What’s the point of trading in one boss for another, even if you’re your own boss? What many entrepreneurs want is to strike it rich, so that they do not have to work if they so choose. Therefore, knowing when to sell your company is an important skillset in itself, like a professional gambler who knows when to call it a night and keep his winnings.

Sell too early, and your company could go on to be worth even more, making for a sort of opportunity cost. Sell too late and your organization could be worth less than you could have earned, making for another type of opportunity cost!

It is interesting to come across a New Orleans Saints license plate. You realize that it’s a real football fan in there inside the car or truck, and you also realize he or she has a social conscience.

Or perhaps it’s just fashionable to care for the city that dare forgot, NOLA – nawlins, the crescent city, the big easy. Regardless of what you call it, you realize that, that is what the New Orleans Saints license plate is referring to – that, and Hurricane Katrina.

The city was devastated by the failure of the federal levee system in the summer of 2005. Even though most residents had cleared out by the time Katrina actually hit, homes and businesses were flooded towards the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. Over a thousand and a half people died, and many are still unaccounted for. And that is just for starters.

So it was absolutely nothing short of national catharsis when the Saints played their first game in the city again, even as reconstruction was still going on all around, with the Superdome itself having been just repaired. Many non-Louisianans took to sporting a New Orleans Saints license plate as a sign of solidarity with the home team and the people they represent.

For there’s practically nothing most Americans like better than to root for the underdog, and following the beating Katrina gave the city rooting for the Saints became some thing of a civic duty. And for one magical moment, similar to when New York teams took to the field after 9/11, sports became about a lot more than just bragging rights. It became a holy ritual whereby a national community can cleanse itself, redeem itself, reconnect with itself.

No more was sports mere entertainment. No more were spectators living vicariously through the overpaid and often bad-behaved players. This time, everybody was a New Orleanian.

Racing strategies for alleycat races can be extremely individualistic. An alleycat race is an informal bike race, likely popularized by bicycle messengers. Of course, informal racing has always existed, but the adjective “alleycat” is really a fairly recent addition; the first official use was by a 1989 Toronto race. Messengers participating in that and subsequent alleycats helped spread the name and concept far and wide.

As individual as the strategies are the rules involved, for one characteristic of an alleycat race is its extremely localized nature, with just about everything tailored to native conditions and practices. Team racing can be relatively rare, as the work of a bicycle messenger that these races reflect is solitary.

On the other hand, relay races are fun for the contestants precisely because it puts an interesting social twist on the otherwise singularly solitary nature of their work on the weekdays (alleycat races take place around major holidays so that messengers, who live paycheck-to-paycheck with little to no benefits, can participate).

Alleycat races involve not only speed, but traffic handling skills and a rider’s intimate knowledge of local routes. As might be imagined, alleycat races heavily reflect the bicycle messenger subculture, not least of which is the fact that they are of questionable legality in most jurisdictions.

Originally spontaneous, their growth has meant increasing organization, which in turn means working with local authorities, such as acquiring all necessary permits. But organization has also meant that alleycat races can be very creative and themed with social causes such as global warming and bicycle advocacy.

In keeping with its anti-establishment roots, numerous alleycat races resist formality, particularly in the form of obtaining permission. The right to free assembly is evoked to justify these essentially spontaneous races. Unfortunately, motorized vehicles occupy such a venerable place in American culture that authorities curtail such rights in favor of maintaining automobile convenience.

In spite of its growing reputation over the past several decades, many westerners remain wary of the idea of sushi, and plenty of this trepidation is due in part to the ingredients, many of which sound strange and foreign to us, even after having been translated into English. Perhaps chief among these is seaweed, or from here on out: soy nori sushi. Sushi nori is a popular ingredient in, and method of preparing sushi, generally comprising the wrap inside which all the other ingredients are encased.

Roasted nori sushi, while commonly simply referred to as sea weed, is really a sort of algae traditionally cultivated in the harbors of Japan. The first method of harvest – scraping the algae off dock pilings, rolling it out into thin sheets and then allowing it dry in the sun – doesn’t specifically sound appetizing, but modern methods of cultivation and preparing are usually far removed from scraping it out of a filthy harbor. These days, the process of shredding and rack-drying sushi nori is often a highly sophisticated form of agriculture closer resembling paper making than anything else.

The actual growth of nori commences in an exceedingly controlled environment, in harbors or bays especially designated for that objective, functioning like an aquatic version of a traditional agricultural field. On the surface of these waters, buoys are located from which large nets are suspended, floating on the water’s surface. The seaweed used in the production of sushi nori, a species of red algae known as Porphyra, is then allowed to grow naturally upon these nets.

Sushi nori – nori being the Japanese name for Porphyra – has a rather small gestation period, only taking about 45 days from the first seeding to the harvest of fully cultivated plants, and multiple harvests can be made from a single seeding, usually after intervals of about ten days. When the plants are harvested, they are processed using a assortment of machines specially designed to replicate the process of shredding and drying by hand, with the benefit of enhanced efficiency along with speed. The end result is a huge, paper-thin sheet of dried sushi nori. These sheets may cost between six cents, where sushi is harvested throughout Chinese waters, to $50 for nori harvested from the traditional harbors off the coast of Japan, according to quality and the exact method of manufacturing.

Sheets of nori are generally cut in measurements of around 18 centimeters by 20 centimeters, which makes them the best size for preparing sushi nori. The sheets are laid out and the various ingredients – which include a huge selection of seafood and vegetables, depending on the exact kind of sushi – are placed on top. The entire sheet is then rolled up, enclosing the other components inside and the roll itself sliced into several sections, supposing the contour and appearance that we most often associate with sushi.

Between global warming and massive increases in fuel prices, many people are reconsidering their transportation. Honda has two natural gas cars the IRS absolutely loves.

In 2005, the federal government passed a new energy policy act that created tax benefits for the use of alternative fuel vehicles. Most people are generally aware of this given the fact they get a tax credit break when they purchase a hybrid vehicle. What fewer people know, however, is they get massive tax breaks if they purchase a natural gas powered vehicle such as a Honda Civic GX.

Buried within the language of the new energy policy act is the Alterative Motor Vehicle Credit. The AMVC goes well above and beyond the financial benefits granted to hybrid cars. The act defines four distinct areas where the IRS must issue significant tax credits. Those categories include fuel cell vehicles, advanced lean burn technologies, hybrid vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles. While most vehicles fall within the hybrid classification, new models are coming on the market that fall within the remaining three.

Indeed, the IRS has just issued the tax credit amounts that can be claimed by individuals that purchase the Honda natural gas models. Specifically, the tax credit amount is $4,000 if you purchase either the 2006 or 2007 Honda Civic GX. The car must be purchased new and directly form a dealer. Please note, these cars run only on natural gas, which is why they get such a big tax credit.

This $4,000 tax credit is a major financial incentive for most taxpayers. Unlike a tax deduction, a tax credit is applied directly to the amount of money you owe the IRS. If you prepare your tax returns and determine you owe $7,000 to the IRS, the tax credit would reduce this amount to $3,000. In short, we are talking about major savings.

There is little dispute that we are facing significant issues related to energy. From global warming to our reliance on foreign sources for fuel, things are pretty bleak. The transition to alternative fuel sources makes sense, and now the tax credit for natural gas powered vehicles makes financial sense as well.
