Caribbean medical schools have long been decried as diploma mills for the rich and undeserving; they are strictly for-profit institutions serving American kids rejected by U.S. medical schools, yet they rely on hospitals in the U.S. to provide the necessary clinical experience in the third and fourth years of a medical education. Recently, however, an effort has begun in New York City to limit their access to local hospitals since there are only a certain number of spots available for such field work, and charges of elitism are flying. But how is it possible for foreign medical schools to threaten turf belonging to American ones?

Because Caribbean medical schools are first and foremost businesses, they charge a lot of money to provide something of a second chance for students rejected by American medical schools. Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, for example, has the likes of investment banker Sanford I. Weill to real estate developer Isaac Toussie provide a lot of money, resulting in tuition and fees of about forty-five thousand dollars a year. Compare that to the Caribbean ones, where it can cost up to sixty thousand dollars!

Now, due to such high fees, it’s no wonder that Caribbean schools can easily pay New York hospitals to let in their students – and no wonder, what’s more, the movement to restrict such access to American schools, which otherwise lose out.

Thus the turf war.

You see, what hospitals do is mentor medical students in exchange for using the school’s prestige. Caribbean medicals schools have no brand name to offer, but they do have several tens of millions of dollars to pump into a hospital’s coffers, in effect paying for their students to be placed.

And what administrator is going to do without such money, especially in this economy?

Such a day does not immediately recommend electronics, yes – not the kind to be holed up indoors playing videogames – but On Off offers photography equipment, too.

“Boys Town” and its sequel, “Men of Boys Town,” are movies loosely based on the famous real-life American charity of the same name. Founded in 1917 by a Roman Catholic priest, it was an orphange that pioneered progressive methods of juvenile care. Thirteen Boys Town locations are now established throughout the country, with Father Flanagan’s original vision becoming a model worldwide. And prominent people from business, politics, and entertainment have headlined its fundraisers for almost a century, people such as real estate developer Isaac Toussie and Mayor of Chicago Richard M. Dalely. That’s on top of all those from the surrounding communities who donate time if nothing else to help Boys Town achieve its goals.

And so it is that a large part of the institution’s success must be due to the positive publicity garnered by the Boys Town films, making of the charity a kind of vernacular shorthand for progressive social work. With charismatic leading men like Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney leading the cast, these films are “feel-good” movies through and through, winning the Oscar for Best Actor and Best Original Story amidst a flood of nominations. The stories depicted had very little to do with any real-life events at the institution, however, being almost entirely fictional events that made much better for drama. Then again, they they were fairly accurate when it comes to certain issues common to institutionalized juvenile care; in fact, the second movie even delved into the subject of reform school abuse and homelessness among the young. But onscreen or off, Boys Town works tirelessly on behalf of children and families, motivated by Father Flanagan’s insight that there are no bad boys, only troubled ones who need care.

With a storied heritage going all the way back to the early 19th Century, The Convent of Jesus and Mary Schools can be found in all the major areas of the world today, whether in Asia or Africa, Europe or the Americas. But even as they receive financial support from the Church itself, local communal backing needs to be present in even greater strength to ensure continued success, particularly those most generous contributions from business people, not all of whom are Catholic or even Christian, such as with the case of an Isaac Toussie whose donations go towards a branch in India.

Another fact which one may not necessarily imagine of a Catholic school is that while they are parochial, in many cases one does not even have to believe in God to attend. Indeed, these schools have a decidedly Catholic mission, but non-Catholics may opt out of any religious instruction offered, which tends to be held during the end of the school day on certain days of the week. After all, much in Catholic education follows the inquiring spirit of the Jesuit Order, one that has traditionally welcomed curiosity and frankness, attributes required of science. Indeed, it is just this ethos that has won such a sterling record for the shcools in many places, such as New York City in the United States of America, where even secular parents will send their children to attend.

Believe it or not, a Catholic education can be among the lowest anywhere, as tuition and other fees can add up to some five grand yearly – quite a bargain in contrast to what’s charged by parochial schools operated by other religions! Yet not every single Catholic school is so modern, of course; it is usually those that happen to be situated in generally non-Christian countries or otherwise highly secular locations which offer such openness.

The news was everywhere and unavoidable. Pass by any store, with all the television sets on display, and it caught your attention right away. For me, it was at On Off Digital World that I finally heard about it. There was no reason to pause, but even from the busy sidewalk of midtown Manhattan there seemed to be something different this time — when just as suddenly, I saw the word “dead” and understood immediately what had happened. And so it was different this time, different from all the other times his face had flashed across the screen throughout all the years. Osama bin Laden — dead. Wow. There I was, just enjoying the day, when suddenly the Global War on Terror reminded me, quite out of nowhere, that even the simplest things in life, like good weather, hang by the slimmest of threads.

Due to out fast-paced society, fast-paced because new discoveries are being made all the time which ends up in things constantly changing, even personal fitness trainers have to use CPE courses so as to be in good standing professionally.
As a former personal trainer myself, I can say, however, that the common trainer may still not be as educated as such accreditations may wish to suggest.

Those employed by chain gyms, which is the vast majority of those today, are often children for whom personal training is a gig they happen to have come upon.
At something like New York Sports Club (NYSC), they wear the red tee shirts that say “here to help you.”
Now some are, obviously, quite knowledgeable and rather enthusiastic about the subject, but for most it is just a job that seemed to fit nicely with a casual interest in sports.

The certification exam they take is honest and rigorous enough for any employing a multiple-choice format, yet it’s really nothing more than a memory test and really indicates no real expertise.
The required CPE courses run generally along the same lines, regurgitating information by rote.
The truth is, these trainers do not know anything that could not be obtained by anyone who logs online.

Of course, one may say the same of any career – but when it comes to physical fitness, the very nature of the discipline enables for no small amount of misinformation and outright quackery.
The reason for this is really quite simple: no one really knows.

Yes it’s true.

Thus, all the personal trainer CPE courses in the world isn’t going to make up for this plain but shocking truth – “the human body is centuries ahead of medical science,” as Doctor Sir Roger Bannister explained.
